the Bruots in the USA.jpg

The first Bruots have come to the US (or rather America that time) probably in the 17th century. By the end of the 17th century and into the 18th century, roughly 500,000 Huguenots had fled France during a series of religious persecutions. They relocated to Protestant nations. I expect that the name originated in Germany - both Bruot and Bruoth were words of the old German language. I wonder whether this supposition is right and if so, which version was it - with or without the "H" at the end.

North America: A group of Norman Huguenots under the leadership of Jean Ribault in 1562 established the small colony of Fort Caroline in 1564, on the banks of the St. Johns River, in what is today Jacksonville, Florida. The colony was the first attempt at any permanent European settlement in the present-day continental United States, but the group survived only a short time.

In 1700 several hundred French Huguenots migrated from England to the colony of Virginia.

Message form Andrew Bruoth, USA:

Bonjour Fedor,

Here is some of the Bruot history that I have. The Bruot Family Alcide Emile Bruot, son of Peter Bruot and his wife, Marion Broginard Bruot, was born in Valentigney, France on December 10. 1861. He came to the United States with his family when he was six years old. They first located in Wisconsin, but after a few months there, the family moved to the Stryker area. He was of a family that consisted of 3 brothers and 3 sisters, namely: Henry Bruot, who settled in Toledo, Ohio and had one son, Russel; Lem Bruot, who settled in in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and had two sons, Lewis and Roy, and one daughter, Amelia; Ulysses Bruot, who settled in the Stryker area and never married; Amelia Bruot Phillips, who settled in New York state, later moving to Stryker, and had two sons, George and LeRoy; Louise Bruot Bourquin, Stryker, who died in childbirth, leaving three daughters, Pearl, Fanny, and Ellen; and Ellen Bruot Beucler, Stryker, who had eight children, Grace, Laura, Louise, Leland, Clarence, Amelia, and Elmer. I can trace my family to 1749 in France (Jean George Bruot).

I believe we have gone back as far as the 1600's with our family history but it is all in France. I hope this helps. Andrew Bruot
